A Place to Grow

The Davenant House is a center for the retrieval of Christian wisdom for the renewal and building up of the contemporary church.

About Davenant House

Davenant House is the physical home of The Davenant Institute, located in the the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in upstate South Carolina.

Surrounded by the beauty of God’s creation and complete with large wrap-around porches and hiking trails that enable one to enjoy it, the Davenant House provides an ideal location for quiet study, reflection, and contemplation of Christian wisdom, God’s Word, and his works. Add in a nice library of books, good food, and a beautiful facility and all that remains is to fill it with people hungry to go deeper and fellowship together – people like you!

Although Davenant seeks to make the most of the digital frontier, we remain convinced of the importance of in-person fellowship. Davenant House is therefore an integral part of our work.

Programs at the Davenant House

Our annual Convivium Irenicum serves as a microcosm of the Davenant Institute’s mission, and serves as the capstone to each academic year. For three days we do much more than present and listen to papers—we eat and drink together, worship together, discuss abstruse philosophical questions, hard pastoral challenges, and our favorite books as we walk through the woods or recline on the porch. We bring together not merely scholars and grad students, but pastors, other church leaders, businessmen, and public servants. Together, we explore what it means to retrieve the wisdom of our Protestant heritage for the sake of our church and nation today.

Our bi-annual Carolinas Regional Convivium Irenicum at Davenant House centers on using literature for encouraging the growth of classical Protestantism and retrieval of wisdom for the church. Twice a year we gather for a Friday night and Saturday of fellowship, friendship, and conversation renewing Christian wisdom for the church.

Every summer we offer 12-day programs as something of an intellectual crash course in how to be an intelligent, faithful and historically-grounded Protestant in the twenty-first century. Beginning with a grounding in key biblical themes and Protestant doctrines, the program will continue with explorations of five core themes: Theology, Christian Philosophy, Natural Philosophy, Ethics, and Politics. Featuring readings, lectures, and discussion seminars each day, it will provide an intense but rewarding time of intellectual stimulation, laying a foundation for faithful Christian discipleship in the modern world, rooted in the wisdom of the past.
